So I have a 1998 Tacoma with a 4-cylinder engine, 2-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission.
Here’s what occurred:
I was having fun with burnouts and whipping about. Anyway, I was in first gear, burning out, and moved into second gear quickly.
My gearbox became stuck in second gear, so I removed the shifter and top cap and managed to get it unstuck. I now have no first or second gears. When I go to first or second gear, it feels like it engages, but nothing happens.
Any suggestions or advice on what may have occurred would be highly appreciated.

According to your numerous explanations, the following might be the issues your ride is facing:
-
- Shift Fork or synchronizer damage: Rapid shifting and burnouts can sometimes cause damage to the shift fork or synchronizers. This could explain why the first and second gears feel engaged but don’t transmit power.
- Internal transmission damage: There might be internal damage within the transmission, such as broken or worn gears. This would require a more in-depth inspection and possibly rebuilding or replacing certain components.
- Linkage issues: The linkage that connects the shifter to the transmission might be misaligned or damaged. Double-checking the linkage and ensuring everything is properly connected and aligned could help.
- Shift lever seat and cap: The shift lever seat and cap can wear out or get damaged, causing shifting issues. Replacing these parts might resolve the problem.
I would advise you to consult with a professional mechanic who can perform a thorough inspection and provide a precise diagnosis.
