I find it odd that with all the cameras on modern vehicles, there’s no built-in dashcam recording feature. Did I miss something, or is this really not an option?
Yes, but not without performing major surgery on your wiring harness.

And it’s not odd—Toyota absolutely does not want anyone interfering with the cameras since they are considered safety devices, especially the forward-facing camera used for lane tracing, pedestrian detection, and other advanced driver assistance features.
This is why even Toyota’s official dashcam is a completely separate add-on camera.
Absolutely makes sense, but I feel like the feed could at least be spliced to an SD card without interfering with the primary function of the camera.
Also, for lane tracing, pedestrian detection, and similar features, those events could also be logged onto the SD card as data, much like how dashcams overlay event data.
Here’s to hoping Toyota reimagines this system with recording in mind.
