Anyone Out There Actually Using Snow Chains for Winter Roads?

For those of you who deal with snow every winter, what’s your experience with snow chains? We’re getting ready to head to Colorado, and I want to be prepared in case the weather gets rough.

I’ve been in Colorado for over 30 years. Honestly, unless you’re going off-roading in deep snow, you really don’t need chains here. They do check for 4WD or snow tires, but if you’ve got that, you’re set.

@Zion
For off-roading, I think just letting some air out of the tires works better than having to put chains on.

@Zion
Thanks for the info! I’ve been to Colorado a few times but never during rough conditions. Just trying to be cautious.

I wouldn’t put chains on your truck. I think your manual even says not to. Raptors can handle snow pretty well without them. Check out my Braptor in this clip—it does just fine.

Yeah, I’m not too worried about the truck itself. I just heard some areas in Colorado have chain requirements.

@Oli
Chain laws mostly apply to big trucks. For regular cars, as long as you have 4WD or snow-rated tires, you should be fine under the Traction Law.

@Oli
I’ve driven through plenty of checkpoints and never had to put chains on my Raptor or any off-road truck.

@Oli
I’m from Colorado too—4WD or snow tires are all you need.

@Oli
For a regular car, especially in November, no chains are required unless you’re driving a commercial vehicle.

I live in a lake-effect snow area. My truck handles deep snow without chains just fine. Unless the roads are super icy, chains aren’t necessary, even with snow up to the bumper.

Just put it in Slippery mode instead of using chains. Chains can cause the tires to skip, which might mess with the sensors, especially in 4A or 4H.

Forget Slippery mode—just go Baja mode and have some fun!

@Samantha
I’d pay to see how that goes :joy:

This was on a trip from Steens Mountain down to Leslie Gulch in eastern Oregon.

@Samantha
Wow, that sounds like quite the adventure! How did it end up?

Truck got totaled about 5 years ago on that trip.

Ouch, that’s rough. Sorry to hear that.
