Are Gen 3 Tacomas reliable for 20+ years?

I’ve got a 2016 Audi A6 Quattro that needs a pricey transmission part replaced, and it’s only at 88k miles. I’ve taken good care of it, but it’s had a few issues, so I’m thinking of moving on. I’m looking at a Tacoma (2019-2021), either SR5 or SR, 4WD, with less than 50k miles. What’s the reliability like? I’m 20 and hoping it’ll last me until I’m about 45. I also love the way they look, the size is perfect, and the customization options are great.

I’ve had absolutely no issues with my 2021.

Same here, zero problems with my 2021 as well.

Mine’s been reliable too. No issues at all so far.

You can’t know long-term reliability on a truck less than five years old, but Toyotas are known for lasting a long time. There’s a reason you still see first gens on the road. I have a 2023 and plan to keep it for over 20 years. That’s why I chose a Tacoma.

3rd gens are known to be pretty reliable. Someone recently posted their Tacoma with 400k miles. Personally, I have a 2020 and just passed 100k without any major issues. If you keep up with maintenance like oil changes, diff fluid, trans fluid, spark plugs, and alignments, you can expect it to last around 250k-300k miles.

If you’re buying used, try to get a maintenance record to ensure it’s been cared for.

Thanks for the advice! My friend mentioned that I need to wash the frame in winter because they rust easily.

It depends on where you live. If you’re in a place that salts the roads, then yes, definitely wash it regularly. You might also consider adding a protective coating like fluid film to help with rust.

@Val
Be careful if you’re parking in a garage during winter. The salt from the roads mixed with the slush can accelerate rust when it melts inside. Undercoating with something like Krown or Rust Check can help a lot.

Good tip! I have a carwash membership and make sure to include an undercarriage wash, even though I don’t go into areas that use a lot of salt.

I’ve had my 2019 since it was new, and it’s been perfect. Take care of it, and it’ll take care of you.

The 3rd gen Tacoma is one of the most reliable midsize trucks, but the 2nd gen or 5th gen 4Runner with the 4.0L V6 might be even more solid.

Make sure to take a long test drive first. The ergonomics can feel cramped, especially if you’re used to something like an Audi. The Tacoma won’t be as smooth or comfortable but is a great off-road vehicle.

@Lexi
I’m 5’11”, so I think it should be okay. Honestly, I’m ready to move away from the luxury of the Audi. The interiors are great, but it’s stressful dealing with expensive repairs. I like how basic the Tacoma feels.

@Peyton
5’11” might still feel tight, so definitely test it out. Coming from an Audi, the Tacoma will feel pretty rough, but if you’re okay with that, it’ll work.

@Peyton
I’m 5’11” too and drive a 2020 Tacoma. It’s fine for short trips, but I do notice some discomfort on longer drives compared to my old VW Tiguan.

@Lexi
Yeah, until the frame rusts out.

I switched from BMWs to my 2021 Tacoma. It’s not going to drive like a luxury car, but it’s been solid. I’ve put 55k hard miles on it, and it hasn’t let me down.

Oh, must be nice to switch from a BMW! Fancy lol.

You’re driving an Audi and asking about Toyota reliability? Haha!

Don’t be mean to my poor car!
