Are snorkels for Toyota Tacoma a gimmick or a useful upgrade?

Are snorkels for the Toyota Tacoma just a gimmick or a legit upgrade? I understand they’re supposed to help with river fording by moving the air filter above the windshield, which makes sense. But I find it odd that people in desert areas who rarely cross rivers still use them, claiming it’s for dust. I’m not buying that. They often point to off-road race trucks using them, but if that’s true, why don’t all off-road race vehicles have them?

I get where you’re coming from. Some rally cars use snorkels, especially when there are water crossings, like in the recent Silk Way Rally. But it’s true that many Baja racers don’t have them. They use different methods to get clean air. Some even relocate their filters inside the cabin, while others use race filters with pre-filters.

Yeah I know some folks with prerunners who have put in tons of miles in Baja since 2006. They found that their race filters mounted in the engine bay work really well.

That’s interesting. I’ve heard about particle separators too, which are great, but most snorkels don’t have them. How does raising the air intake help with dust in a dusty environment?

Good question Ray. The idea is that the air up high is cleaner than what’s down low, especially near the tires where dust is kicked up. So some think relocating the intake helps.

I agree with that. I also think many lifted trucks end up with more dust and mud getting in because of modifications. A properly installed desert intake can solve those issues and looks cool too.

Exactly. While race cars might not always use filters, it’s different for passenger vehicles. Snorkels can provide cleaner air in dusty conditions and prevent water from entering during crossings.

That makes sense, but why don’t more desert race trucks have snorkels if they can offer such benefits?

That’s a fair point Ray. Race vehicles don’t have the same durability needs as passenger cars. They’re built for speed, and many don’t use air filters. But it seems like snorkels could be useful for regular off-roading.

But what about reliability? Off-road desert racing vehicles are built tough. It’s surprising to hear they don’t use snorkels more often.

Good question Bummpy. I think it’s all about what works best in specific conditions. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s necessary for everyone.

I see your point. Some people just prefer the look or want to be ready for anything, even if they don’t really need it.

If someone doesn’t see the value in snorkels, they definitely don’t have to use one.

Well, I’ve made my decision. I think snorkels are mainly for dust now. Thanks for the insights everyone
