I have a Tacoma that looks just like this one, and I was told I might need a proportional brake controller to tow a double axle camper. The truck already has the tow package. What exactly do I need to get for this setup? Any recommendations?
How much does your camper weigh? If it’s over 2990 lbs, it needs electric brakes. If that’s the case, you should get a brake controller for your truck. I use the Redarc controller for my tandem axle trailer, and it works great.

I’ll back this up… Redarc is solid and the install is super easy.
You’ll need a brake controller and the right adapter harness to hook up to the Tow Package harness. I’ve been using the Tekonsha P3 (with harness) for years and love it. My brother, on the other hand, swears by his Hayes (not sure if it includes a harness). The controller adjusts trailer braking based on how hard you press your truck’s brakes. Here’s a good discussion on it: Toyota Nation-Trailer brake control.
@Amari
My whole family runs Tekonsha, and we’ve never had an issue.
