I have a one-year-old 2023 SR DC 4x4 that got totaled. I’m getting only $1k less than what I paid for it brand new. I quickly put a deposit on a 2024 SR 4x4 in black, arriving in 4-6 weeks. However, I found out that the 4-cylinder engine in the 2024 SR has worse torque and HP than the V6 in my 2023. Plus, I’m paying almost $5k more (after taxes, owning outright) with no MPG benefits (I got 22mpg combined in my 2023 with stock tires).
I’m considering buying a Rav4 Hybrid for daily use and selling it once the 4th gen has more time to work out any issues. Has anyone driven the 2024 SR and can share their opinion on how it feels? I thought the V6 was reliable but slow. I can’t imagine a modern truck with a lower HP/Torque.
I am disappointed but glad I found out now so I can decide before the truck arrives.
I’m curious to know if the drivetrain components are identical. If they are, it might be as simple as getting a VF tune to regain the horsepower it should have had.
Maybe Toyota will reconsider their approach to the D-tuned SR. They should use the same T4 engine in all their trucks and find a way to boost the performance numbers on the Pro models. Halo trucks need halo horsepower. From what I understand, GM eliminated their D-tuned 2.7t engine and now offers consistent specs across the board. The ZR2 should indeed have more power compared to other Colorados, as it’s the halo model. If you’re set on getting a Toyota, the SR5 might be your best bet. Personally, the D-tuned engine is a dealbreaker for me. The same issue exists with the Tundra, and I’m not sure if anything has changed since 2022.
I can’t comment on the '24 SR (what’s up with the tuning, Toyota?), but our '22 RAV4 Hybrid is probably the best Toyota vehicle we’ve ever owned. It has excellent acceleration, is comfortable and functional, and easily surpasses its EPA-estimated MPG.
It’s understandable to be disappointed with the downgrade in engine performance and the price increase. Considering a Rav4 Hybrid as a daily driver while you wait for the 4th gen Tacoma to mature is a smart move.
