How Do Toyota Tacoma Owners Feel About Their Camper Shells?

How Do Toyota Tacoma Owners Feel About Their Camper Shells? I’m in the process of searching for a camper shell for my 3rd gen DCSB. I’m looking for something budget-friendly that still offers good functionality, like venting, sliding windows, windoors, and a hinged or removable front window so I can clean both the truck’s rear windshield and the shell’s front window. I don’t do extreme off-roading, but I do like exploring the backcountry in AZ. What do you all use and recommend?

I’ve got a LEER100XR that I bought in late 2019. It cost me around $2800 and includes all the features you mentioned, plus windoors on both sides. In my opinion, windoors are a must-have, even though they add about $500. I’ve noticed prices have really gone up since then. I’d recommend checking for used options if you want to stick to a budget. When I was shopping around, I got quotes ranging up to $4K, so be wary of shops that add extra fees.

I’ve been searching for a camper shell for the last 3-4 months, hoping to find a used one. I got quotes for the Leer 100XL and ARE, and they were both around $4K. The prices are just crazy right now!

:taco: I finally found a Jason brand camper shell on Facebook Marketplace for $150 after months of looking. It was a used car lot selling it, and it just happened to fit my truck perfectly. Keep searching, and you might find a great deal too.

I’ve got an ARE on my 21 OR long bed. It doesn’t have windoors, but I found a used one on Craigslist for $1000, which was a steal. I added a roof rack and it’s great for camping and transporting gear. It’s made my Tacoma even more versatile.

I’ve got a Leer 180 on my 2013 TRD OR SB. It was $2300 installed back in 2017, before prices went through the roof. It came with a lot of features like a carpeted headliner, windoors, and a Thule channel on top. I love the extra headroom and the rear door’s wide opening, it’s really convenient.

I have a Leer 100XR with roof rails, windoors, and a removable front glass. It’s also carpeted, so I can stick all my patches from various parks. I made a DIY drawer system from aluminum and plastic paneling that’s easy to disassemble. I also have solar panels and a fridge setup, makes camping a breeze.

I got a Century base model for my DCLB 3rd gen. It only has windoors and a rack rail. Color matching was good, and it was $3500. I didn’t need any of the extra features like automatic unlocking, so this worked for me.

I went with a Snugtop Rebel I found on Facebook Marketplace for $1200. It came with windoors and a Yakima rack, and I had it painted to match my Tacoma. The original price was $3600, so it was quite a bargain. If you can wait, used options can save you a lot.

I was looking at Go Fast camper shells, just the shell without a tent on top. They look solid and durable, though I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
