How much weight can the tailgate really hold?

Just curious… anyone know how much weight the tailgate can safely handle before it gives out?

Way more than you probably need

I remember hearing it’s rated for somewhere around 300 to 400 pounds, but it can handle more. The weak point seems to be the plastic panel on the inside of the gate, not the gate itself.

Yeah I read the same thing… 300lbs sounds like it’s based on weight being right at the edge and not spread out much. If the load is closer to the truck and spread wide, it’s probably not a problem. And they likely rated it assuming the truck hits a bump while driving too, which puts more pressure than just standing still.

Wait what? I thought most Tacomas can carry like 1000lbs in the back.

EDIT: Never mind, I got confused

@Paul
We’re talking about how much the tailgate itself can hold, not the full payload of the bed.

@Paul
Yeah, max tailgate weight is what I was talking about. 300-400lbs range. I’ve carried over 1600lbs in the bed before, but that’s totally different.

That snowmobile looks like it’s about 400lbs

@Asa
Closer to 700lbs actually

And that’s before you add gas lol

Yep… those big 4-stroke sleds are heavy

People don’t believe me when I say mine is over 600lbs. They think it’s like a dirt bike or something.

Honestly looks like a long bed would’ve helped here

Tailgate limit = exactly one snowmobile

Don’t bother adding a red flag… might push it over the edge /s

If you cut some 3/4in plywood to sit between the wheel wells and over the tailgate, it’ll help protect that plastic layer.

Most of that sled’s weight is inside the bed anyway. It’s the same as what you see when guys load it up with the gate closed and part of it sticks out.

I’d say less than half of it is inside the bed though

@Keir
Yeah but all the heavy stuff—engine and drivetrain—is in the bed part

Try sliding a 2x10 board under the track so it shifts more weight into the bed. That’s what I usually do. Looks like this guy didn’t pull it forward enough either… skis should be up by the window (just wrap them in something soft so they don’t crack the glass)

This is the most New Brunswick thing I’ve seen lately
