Is it normal for my truck to shift like this?

Picked up a 2019 TRD OR recently and I’m enjoying it, but the transmission doesn’t feel as smooth as my 2007 did. Just wondering if this is normal for the newer models. Anyone else experience this?

I went with the KDMax Pro tune. Met up with a guy who set it up, and it immediately felt smoother. I got the basic version, but they offer a few options, each one a bit more aggressive. It made a big difference for me. Worth the $400?

@Porter
Thanks, I’ll look into that!

If you don’t mind me asking, how much did the tune cost?

Most run around $500 or so.

I think it’s pretty steep. I’ve been using tuning modules for years, and before KDMax, the original tuner would charge $50-$75 per tune. Not sure why the price shot up, but I still enjoy the tunes from before it got sold.

OTT tune will totally change your truck’s feel. Smoother shifting, better throttle response, and you can map the ETC button for a second throttle setting.

Sounds good, I might look into getting a tune soon.

Before I got my 2017, I was driving a 2.5 gen, and yeah, the 3rd gen’s shifting isn’t as smooth. I know people who tune them to stop the gear hunting, but it hasn’t bothered me enough to get it done myself.

@Hollis
Yeah, not a huge deal for me either, but I wanted to know if it’s normal.

I have a 2019 V6 AT and yeah, it’s always shifted a bit rough. It’s a fuel-saving thing, I think. When it bugs me, I switch to ECT mode, and it smooths out. I don’t think a tune is necessary, but to each their own! I just wish Toyota had set it up like ECT mode by default.

You need an OTT tune. These 3rd gens aren’t smooth-shifting right out of the box, but a tune can help fix the gear hunting.

Been thinking about it. Might just go for it! Thanks.

@Kim
I’ll back that up! OTT made a huge difference for me, and they can even adjust for bigger tires if you’ve got them.

Good to know. I’ve got someone local who does it. Thanks!

‘Fix’ might be a strong word. It does make it more bearable, though.

@Spencer
It definitely sorts out the gear-shifting issues. Throttle response and tune preferences are more of a personal choice.

For city driving, I just switch to ECT mode. It helps a lot with the shifting. When I first got mine, I thought there was something wrong with the transmission too.

OTT tune is the way to go, it’ll make your 3rd gen feel like the truck you thought you were buying.
