I drive a 2019 TRD Offroad with 64,824 miles. Last week, the check engine light came on and started flashing. My local mechanic, who I trust, said I need to replace the spark plugs and ignition coils.
They quoted me $1,539 for everything. Is this a normal price? Should I try doing it myself?
One more thing – if I do decide to do it myself, where can I get OEM plugs and coils? Do I go to a Toyota dealer for that?
I just replaced the plugs and coils on my 2015 4.0 V6 at 175,000 miles. It runs much smoother now. I think I still had the original plugs from the factory on the driver’s side. I did it myself using extensions, a swivel set, and a magnet I got from Walmart. I borrowed a 5/8 DEEP well socket for each plug and used the magnet to pull them out.
I bought the plugs and coils from RockAuto. It’s a great website to get car parts.
You need to find out what codes are causing the check engine light to flash. For plugs, check the service manual and then Google. For coils, wait until you know the codes before buying them. If you need them, most dealer websites let you enter your VIN and search for parts your truck may need.

Yeah, the light hasn’t come back on, and the mechanic has been trying all week to get it to flash again, but no luck. I’m not sure if they’ve checked the plugs yet or if they’re just guessing.
Do I need to wait until the light flashes again before doing anything?
The coils just unbolt from the valve cover, unplug from the wire harness, and then the spark plugs come out like normal. It’s really a simple job, and there are plenty of YouTube videos on it. If you get the parts online from the dealership, it’s cheaper too.

Yeah, the first time I did it, it took me about 2 hours. Make sure you have an extendable magnet and a magnetic spark plug socket. Most of the time is just figuring out how to get the plugs out from tight spaces.
