Just got a 22 TRD OR, what upgrades should I start with? What are some must-haves?

I’m loving the stock feel for now, but I’m curious about what extras would really improve the ride. What would you recommend first?

I’d start with a power-locking tailgate and a catalytic converter shield. Keeps everything safe before adding the fun stuff.

Got any recommendations for brands?

I went with the OEM power lock from Toyota usually on sale. For cat shields, Miller seems popular; they offer both aluminum and stainless options, depending on your budget. I think Rough Country has one too now.

First thing I’d upgrade is the stereo. I’m still using the stock head unit, but I swapped all the speakers and added a small amp for the rear doors. The factory speaker magnets are super tiny.

Seat covers are a game-changer. I went with Carhartt ones, which were pricey (about $800 for front and back), but there are similar, cheaper brands that use the same material. They really help keep the interior fresh.

Which color did you go for?

Black…my TRD Sport is in Lunar Rock, so I thought tan would clash.

Definitely get the windows tinted.

I recently got mine and added Caliraised ditch lights with an OEM switch. I’d also suggest tint and a power-locking tailgate if you don’t have them yet. Next on my list is a new grille.

If you plan on off-roading, lose the predator steps. They’ll just get caught on rocks and stuff.

The Subaru Kicker Tweeters are an easy and cheap way to get better sound (just don’t work if you have the JBL system).

For tires, go for Toyo, K03, or Wildpeaks. No need to lift the truck right away; the stock Bilsteins are good. But if you add heavier stuff (shell, bumpers), you might need to upgrade suspension.

A good air pump, tire deflaters, plug kit, and portable jump starter are all super useful, too.

For recovery gear, get a snatch strap and a couple of soft shackles and learn how to use them properly. The Taco Garage Dashtop Multi Mount is awesome for hands-free phone or tablet use, especially if you want GPS apps.

Tint the windows, get an overland torque tune, and maybe debadge it.

Honestly, I don’t think the stock Tacoma ride is very enjoyable at all.

Lift kit and some bigger wheels/tires.

I’d personally go for a long bed for a better wheelbase. Hopefully yours has a rear slider window, but a roof rack is ideal for hauling—broke my rear window once with long cargo.

Honestly, I’d swap the stock grille for a TRD Pro or an aftermarket replica. The stock grille looks basic, especially for a high-end model. The “TOYOTA” logo on a TRD grille just looks way better.

Raptor lights and decals.

There’s a chrome rear bumper delete option available. You could also get bumper covers if chrome’s not your thing.
