Just Got My First Tacoma. Excited and Need Advice!

Hey everyone,

My wife and I just picked up our first Tacoma! It’s a 2024 TRD Off Road Premium (gas), and I got a great deal on it. Super excited to have this truck for years to come!

I’m completely new to trucks, so I’d love some guidance on what upgrades make sense and how to do them without spending too much. Also, we just moved to the Rockies and want to start exploring some easy trails and backcountry camping.

A few things I’m considering:

  • A slightly wider stance… does this mess with ride quality or safety?
  • A small lift… how much is reasonable with the stock tires?
  • Bed dividers for Costco runs
  • Fender flares… are they worth it?
  • Interior upgrades like ambient lighting
  • ARB sport rack that works with the OEM tri-fold hard tonneau cover
  • Tents and camping gear recommendations

I’ve been looking through this forum, but I’d love to see some pictures of your trucks for inspiration!

Thanks in advance!

Maybe try using it as is for a while before making a bunch of changes.

Good point, and I definitely will! The truck is new, but the lifestyle isn’t. We spent years driving to the mountains in a Ford Escape and a Tesla Model Y. Finally got something built for it and excited to use it!

@Lennox
If those handled it, the TRD Off Road will be just fine. Even the base model would handle most trails unless you’re doing serious off-roading. I have the same model, and it’s been great. Any upgrades I do are just for fun, not necessity.

@Jonah
Yeah, the Model Y didn’t handle it at all. Tried a trailhead with a bit of loose gravel and killed a CV joint. Fun car, but not made for this.

Yeah, Teslas aren’t built for this. I bet the Escape did better?

The ARB rack doesn’t work with a bed cover. If you’re looking for a lift, Toyota offers an OEM TRD lift kit that adds about 2 inches.

I added a Decked drawer system to mine, and I love it!

Just search for ‘Decked truck bed system.’ It’s a pretty popular mod.

It’s not cheap, but it’s solid. Took me about 2 hours to install by myself.

For bed dividers, check out the $23 ratcheting cargo bars from Harbor Freight. Way more useful than plastic dividers and way cheaper.

That’s exactly what I needed. Thanks!
