Should I install a roof rack on the cab or the camper shell?

I’m thinking of adding a roof rack system to my 2022 Tacoma with an ARE MX camper shell. The shell has a bump in height but isn’t the tallest one. The problem is I don’t have a rail system on the camper shell, so installing it there would be tricky. If I put it on the cab, though, I’d need to make sure there’s enough clearance to avoid bumping the camper shell, especially with long items like kayaks. Is it worth measuring everything and installing it on the cab? Or should I risk voiding the camper shell warranty and install the rack there instead?

It’s a bit tricky with a mid or high rise canopy because lining everything up can be tough. What do you plan to carry on top?

I have a Cabrac roof rack on the cab, and we often carry our canoe. I like that the 16ft boat fits right over the truck without any overhang at the back. I use risers on the gunwale racks to make sure the boat doesn’t hit the top of the canopy.

I plan to set up the back for camping with a platform. I’d like to put boats on top, or if I don’t need the boats, I could use the space for extra storage.
