Should I replace my transmission or repair it for $5600?

So here’s the story: about 2 years ago, I accidentally drained my transmission fluid, and it’s been acting up ever since. I took it to a shop for a diagnosis, and they told me the torque converter and valve gasket need replacing. Also, the magnets were covered in metal, so other parts in the transmission need fixing too.

They quoted me $5670 for the repair, but now I’m thinking: Would it be better to just buy a used transmission? Anyone here replaced a transmission before? How much did it cost you? Appreciate any advice!

My dad found a guy locally who rebuilt his 700r4 in a 3rd gen Camaro for $1800. This guy is a pro and does transmissions for a living. A coworker of mine knows a guy who’ll do it for $800, and he’s had two transmissions rebuilt on his Sierra and Silverado, even with oversized tires.

You should shop around and see if you can find someone who’s reliable and charges less. Replacing it with a used one could be a good option, but keep in mind, the used one might be worn out too.

I did something similar for my second gen Tundra about 6 years ago. I didn’t rebuild it, I just swapped it out with a used one I found on eBay for $1800. It came from a totaled 2014 truck with only 3k miles on it. My truck was a 2008 model.
