Thinking about changing my exhaust. Good idea or not?

I’ve been debating whether to change my exhaust. My truck is completely stock, so I’m not sure if it’s worth it. But I really want to hear a better sound when I hit the gas. What do you guys think?

I have an MBRP setup that dumps right before the rear axle.

Do you like how it sounds?

It was already on the truck when I bought it, but I really like it. It’s hidden well, so you can’t even see it. The sound is nice, and the clearance is great.

The only downside is that it can be loud on the highway, and sometimes I catch a whiff of exhaust. If I had the chance to swap it out, I’d think about trying something different.

I had an MBRP Cat-Back on my old Silverado. Came with the truck when I bought it, and I loved how it sounded. It was also tucked away nicely. MBRP seems like a solid brand.

Got a video or audio clip? Would love to hear it!

I don’t have one right now, but I can take a quick clip tomorrow!

@Sterling
That would be awesome! But no pressure if it’s too much trouble.

I made a fender exit exhaust on mine with a Boral Pro XS and a dual-wall stainless tip: it sounds like :poop: :joy:

Post a video! Post a video!

What engine do you have? I’ve got a MagnaFlow on my 5VZ-FE, and it sounds pretty good. I don’t really like loud trucks, but my stock muffler was rusted out, and the MagnaFlow was the best replacement at the same price.

From what I’ve read, this engine actually prefers a little back pressure, so I doubt it helps performance much.

At the end of the day, it’s your truck. Do what makes you happy!

I looked into this last year. Unless you go to a legit performance shop and get something custom, it’s not really worth it.

Most off-the-shelf options don’t give much performance gain and get mixed reviews. But hey, your call.

I put the TRD exhaust and air filter system in my 2010. No complaints here.

Personally, I don’t like the sound of an exhaust unless there are at least 8 cylinders. Performance gains are minimal. Maybe I’m biased, but after being around muscle cars and V8 trucks with good exhaust setups, a V6 just doesn’t do it for me.

If I were spending $500 on a first mod, I’d rather get some really nice seat covers.

That said, if you like the raspy V6 sound, go for it. If I had to pick one, I’d go with the Borla Type S.

@Brady
I just got seat covers for my 4th Gen, and wow, it was a great upgrade. I spent about $260 on Amazon, and the quality is impressive.

I agree about the exhaust—Tacomas don’t really need to be loud.

@Brady
A lot of the aftermarket exhausts for Tacomas tend to drone once you hit 3,000 RPMs.

What year and model is your truck? I just put a Flowmaster on my 2023 SR5, and I love it! I was worried it wouldn’t sound good on a V6, but it has a deep tone, which is exactly what I wanted.

Definitely worth it—I get compliments all the time!

Skip the exhaust mod and get an OTT tune instead. The truck will drive better and sound better overall.
