I’m getting ready to move from Virginia to Mississippi, which is about 900 miles. Planning to tow my Camry with my 3rd Gen TRD Off Road. I’ve towed heavy stuff before for work, but I’ve never done it with my own truck. I’m planning to go with U-Haul, but I’m not sure which trailer would be the best. Also wondering what else I should know before starting the trip. Thanks to anyone who can help.
If your Camry is front-wheel drive, a regular U-Haul dolly should work just fine.
The heaviest Camry is about 3400 lbs and the U-Haul dolly adds around 750 lbs, so you’re looking at roughly 4100 lbs total. That’s about 410 lbs of tongue weight. Check your truck’s payload—it’s on the sticker inside the driver’s door—and make sure you’re not overloading it. You really don’t want to drive 900 miles with too much weight.
If your Camry is FWD, go with the dolly. You’ll barely notice it’s back there. The full trailer is much heavier and puts a lot more tongue weight on your truck. If you’re already packing stuff in the bed, saving that 1500 lbs with the dolly will help a lot.
