Transmission Failure Experience on 4th Gen Tacoma SR5 4x4 Long Box

Hello folks,

I wanted to share my recent experience with my 4th Gen Tacoma SR5 4x4 Long Box. I picked it up in the new Underground color, and I was absolutely thrilled with it—until I hit around 1200 miles. Out of nowhere, the transmission failed.

It was a huge letdown, especially since I had big plans to take it out on some trails this summer. After a lot of back and forth with the dealer, they ended up buying it back from me. Unfortunately, because of some trail pinstripes, I didn’t get the full purchase price back, but I figured it was better than waiting approximately 4 months for a new transmission to arrive.

Not wanting to be stuck in a rental that long, I decided to trade it in for a short box TRD Off-Road (TRD OR). I’m hoping this one holds up better because I really don’t want to go through this all over again.

Has anyone else had issues with their 4th Gen Tacomas, or did I just get unlucky? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

Oh man, that’s tough… I totally get the excitement of getting a new truck and then…bam, transmission trouble. That’s a huge bummer. I’ve had my share of car issues too, and it’s such a letdown. I think you did the right thing trading it in. Sometimes you just get a lemon, you know? Hopefully, the TRD OR treats you better—fingers crossed! Would love to hear how it goes.
