What 255/85R16 tires should I get?

Hi guys,

I’m having a hard time choosing between the Yokohama Geolandar MTs, the Falken Wildpeak MTs, and the Cooper ST Maxx. The Cooper tires seem like the obvious choice, but they’re significantly more expensive and occasionally get reports of issues like pulling hard on the highway or having very poor tread life.

I need tires that are suitable for highway and freeway driving and will be a noticeable improvement over the stock Goodyear Adventure tires, which are only good on dry pavement. Winter traction is crucial, as is performance on soft dirt and light trails. I don’t plan on doing serious mud bogging or rock crawling; I just want to confidently navigate FS roads and two-track trails in the woods. I also have to handle snow and ice for a couple of months each year.

Does anyone have experience, insights, or recommendations for any of these three tire options?

If you can afford to size up on your rims, you’d probably be better off going with 255/80r17. There are much greater options for ATs of that size. I hoped to get pizza cutters in 255/85r16, but the dearth of AT alternatives dashed my hopes. A fast search on Tire Rack will turn up Cooper ST Maxxs, Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Falken Wildpeaks, and Toyo Open Country AT3s and RTs in 255/80.
