Do you have a truck cap? I’d love to hear about your experience
I’m considering getting a truck cap but could use some advice on the different options available. Right now, I’m in California temporarily, but I’ve lived my whole life in Colorado and Montana, so I need something that can handle I-70 and wet winter conditions. I often spend time in the mountains and will be traveling back and forth between Colorado and California over the next few years, especially during winter while my girlfriend completes her grad school in California. After that, I plan to move to a place with good winter conditions, so I’m looking for something durable. Security is also a priority since I might have valuables in the bed during these trips. I would really appreciate everyone’s thoughts.
So, what type of cap do you have? What do you like about it? Is there anything you don’t like? Could you share a picture of it?
I have a Softopper. It’s lightweight, looks great, and is affordable. It keeps the rain out and conceals anything I put in the back. It’s also easy to retract when I need extra height, and it looks really cool in safari mode.
I used to have a Leer on my old Chevy truck for many years, and it performed well. The only problem I faced was having to replace the pistons on the rear window after more than ten years. Now, I have a Softopper for my Tacoma, which I appreciate for its flexibility. I considered getting a fiberglass cap and setting up a lift system to remove it in my garage, but the Softopper fits my needs perfectly for now.
I’ve had three Leers on my 08 Tacoma, 14 Ram Eco Diesel, and now my 15 Tundra. The Leer was fantastic on the 08 but terrible on the 15. The build quality has really declined over the years. I would definitely choose options like Go Fast Campers, RSI Smart Cap, or even Alucab’s truck cap. My last Leer almost cost me as much as one of these alternatives, and I’m sure the quality would have been much better.
I have a Leer. While I love the windoors they stick and leak water when you open them. The fit and finish on the whole topper just isn’t that great on a $3k product.
