What are the benefits of having a truck cap for your Toyota Tacoma? Do you have one? I’d love to hear your thoughts about it

I’m thinking about getting a truck cap but need some advice on the pros and cons of different types. I’m currently in California but grew up in Colorado and Montana, so I need something that can handle wet winter conditions. I spend a lot of time in the mountains and will be traveling between Colorado and California a lot over the next couple of years while my girlfriend finishes grad school here. I’m looking for something durable since I might move somewhere snowy afterward. Security is a big deal too, as I’ll probably have valuables in the bed. What are your opinions?

I have a Softopper and love it. It’s lightweight, looks good, and is affordable. It keeps rain and prying eyes away from whatever I toss in the back. Plus, it’s easy to retract when I need more height and looks super cool in safari mode :pickup_truck:

I’ve heard great things about the Gen2.5, but I’ve seen a lot of soft toppers flapping in the wind on the freeway, which has made me hesitant to get one

The Softopper brand is really impressive. I’ve driven at 90 mph and maintained 80 mph for long stretches without any issues

I have the Midnight Black version and can say it’s almost 100% waterproof. It doesn’t make noise and stays put even at 80 mph

I agree with that. I love being able to fold it back for bikes or when I help someone move since I have a truck :joy: The only alternatives I’d consider are a camper like GoFast or something more upscale like a 4wheel camper

I have a Leer 100R, and it’s been fantastic. It was a huge upgrade from the tonneau cover that came with my truck

I had a Leer on my old Chevy for years, and it worked great. The only issue was replacing the pistons on the rear window after over a decade. Now I have a Softopper for my Tacoma, which gives me flexibility. I thought about getting a fiberglass cap with a lift system, but the Softopper fits my current needs well

I have a GFC Topper on my 2018 Offroad. What convinced me was the locking side panels and 360-degree access. The white roof panel and their demo showing its strength with a truckload on top also sold me. My only complaints are the locks can stick sometimes, but a quick spray with WD-40 fixes that. The price and wait times can be rough, but the quality and customer support make it worth it.

Oh, I remembered a couple more minor issues: the t-slotted rail system is non-standard, but GFC sells mounting hardware. Also, it doesn’t come with cross-members for mounting stuff to the roof, which surprised me. I thought they came standard, but I was mistaken. I’m trying to figure out how to make my own instead of paying over $300 for GFC’s version.

One personal gripe is that GFC found a height that makes it hard for my roof rack to line up. If it was just an inch taller or shorter, it would have worked better. I end up with this awkward step down across the truck, which is a bit annoying, but it’s not enough to make me regret my choice. Just wanted to share that

But the price is a bit much
