What are the best hard tonneau cover recommendations for a Toyota Tacoma?

I recently bought a slightly used 2021 Tacoma TRD Off-Road (long bed, access cab), and I’m thinking about getting a tonneau cover to secure my stuff when I park. Living in San Francisco, where things get stolen pretty often, I figure it’s a good idea.

Since this is my first truck, I’m not really familiar with tonneau covers. I think I want a hard one that folds, and ideally, something that’s easy to remove so I can get full access to the bed when I need to haul my motorcycle.

I found this one: Peragon Cover. It looks top-tier based on the price, but I’d appreciate any recommendations on other models or reputable brands. Thanks in advance!

I have a Bakflip MX4. It doesn’t need to be removed for full bed access, which is nice, but just a heads-up, it’s not 100% waterproof.

I’ve seen people mention that a lot, “not 100% waterproof.” What do you mean exactly? Does water get in through all the moving parts?

Water just tends to drip in certain spots. Some folks say theirs is completely watertight, but most of us end up getting a little water inside.

I just installed one recently. It was used, and it had been sitting on its side in the previous owner’s garage, so the weather stripping got crimped, and now that spot leaks a bit. I’m planning to fix it with some new weather stripping or maybe silicone when the weather’s nice.

Honestly, though, I love the cover. It looks even better than the OEM ones and adds extra security for the tailgate. :+1:

I’ve got a Peragon cover on my 2023 Off-Road. If security is your main concern, it’s a solid choice. It’s a bit tricky to install solo, and yeah, it does leak a little in the rain like most covers.

One thing to keep in mind, don’t store tall stuff like a box too close to the cab, or you won’t be able to open the cover. It’s a tight fit at first, but the seals will break in after some use.

Overall, though, it looks great and locks up nicely.

Hey, with that Peragon cover, can you still use the bed rails?

I’ve got one too, and I’d definitely recommend it! It’s pretty easy to remove when you need full access to the bed.

I had no idea these covers could cost up to $2k. :flushed: They definitely look high-quality and heavy-duty, though.

Quick question, how much space do they take up when you need to access the full bed? Can you fold them up neatly and just tuck them in the bed? Like, if I want to carry something big, say a couch, can I remove the cover and store it in the bed along with the couch?

Some of the cheaper covers seem to fold up a few times and tuck away easily.

It depends on whether you go with the SE or HD model. They’re rated to hold between 400-1600 lbs, so you can load things like bikes, kayaks, or even campers on top of the cover.

As for removing it, you could fit the whole thing in the bed, but it’s going to take up a lot of space. You’re probably better off leaving it at home if you need the full bed for a day.
