What are the features and benefits of the first-gen step-side camper shell for Toyota Tacoma?

I’ve been searching online and on forums recently for camper shells for my first-gen Tacoma and didn’t realize how challenging it is to find one that fits the step-side bed. Does anyone have recommendations for brands or sources for building a shell that will fit? I’ve included a picture of my truck for reference.

Don’t spoil it with a camper shell.

I wish I didn’t have to, but I’m going on a two-month trip living out of my truck, so it’s necessary haha.

Since I can’t find a suitable one, I’m designing my own. I plan to use wood paneling and aluminum siding to make it unique.

You could consider a bed tent. I’ve also come across pop-up bed campers that fit our truck size.

That’s a great suggestion. It’s been challenging because of the sidestep. I might be able to rig something up to account for the 8-inch width loss, but I’ll look into it. Thanks.

I’ve been searching for a shell too and found one in Colorado that fits the 1st gen stepside. The asking price is a bit high, but it includes a bike rack and canoe rack. I almost made the 10-hour one-way trip to get it.

That might be worth it for me. Finding a shell for the first gen step side is quite a challenge, haha.
