What are the most reliable Toyota Tacoma years and key things to know for a first-time owner?

What are the most reliable Toyota Tacoma years and what should a first-time buyer watch out for?

I currently drive a 2012 VW Jetta, but I’m considering moving out west for my work in the environmental field, where I’ll need a reliable 4WD vehicle. I’ve heard that Tacomas are known for their legendary reliability, but I know every used car has its quirks. I plan to use this truck daily, for camping in remote areas, and for cross-country drives, so mechanical reliability and structural integrity are crucial. I’m not overly concerned with cosmetic issues, and I have some basic mechanical skills for minor repairs. While I’m not looking to cut corners, I’m a graduating college student with a limited budget. Any advice would be appreciated guys.

Given that you’re currently driving a Jetta, any Tacoma generation will likely be more reliable than your current car. Don’t overthink it.

Good point. My Jetta has 160k miles on the original engine and clutch without any major issues. I make sure to stay on top of maintenance and take good care of my cars.

I own a 2011 Jetta TDI and a 2015 Tacoma Double Cab Long Bed 4x4. The Tacoma can handle just about any terrain, and I haven’t had any issues with either vehicle.

The TDI is a different kind of Jetta altogether.

Yeah, I really enjoy it for commuting. Getting 38-42 mpg is fantastic, especially compared to my Tacoma.

My first car was a 25-year-old hand-me-down VW diesel Rabbit with 279K miles and 45 MPG. Having a car like that as your first makes a lasting impression. You start to think all vehicles should last at least 200K miles and can’t understand why you need a hybrid to get 40 MPG. It’s frustrating when your first clunker turns out to be built with what feels like magical durability.

I traded my 2014 Jetta for a 2023 Tacoma, and it turned out to be a complete lemon. The only reason I kept it for so long was because I had other vehicles. I’m making sure that no one in my family ever buys a VW again.

A friend of mine had a GLI and shares a similar experience. The 2.5-liter engine is naturally aspirated, so it’s been fairly reliable for me. It does leak a bit of oil, but that’s typical for a VW.

I had to get the engine replaced, which was luckily covered by warranty, but the new engine is still problematic. I’ve also had issues with the headlights. It’s like every Jetta of this model has a daytime running light out. I’ve noticed it on every single one I see since it happened to me. I’m thoroughly frustrated with VW and wish them nothing but misfortune.
