What are your experiences with camper shells for Toyota Tacomas?

What can you tell me about your camper shells? I’m searching for one for my 3rd gen DCSB and looking for a budget-friendly option. I’d like it to have venting, sliding windows, or even windoors, plus a hinged or removable front window for cleaning both the truck’s rear windshield and the shell’s front window. I don’t do serious off-roading, but I enjoy exploring the fire roads in the Backcountry here in AZ. Let’s discuss.

I have a LEER 100XR that I got at the end of 2019, delivered in early 2020. It cost me about $2800 for my long bed. It includes all the features you mentioned, including windoors on both sides, which I think are essential and worth the extra $500. The shell prices have really gone up; I’ve seen my exact model listed for much more. If you want something budget-friendly, you might need to look for used options. When I was shopping around, I received quotes ranging from $1000 to $4000, so make sure to find a shop that isn’t tacking on unnecessary fees.

I’ve been searching for a camper shell for about 3-4 months, hoping to find a used one. I got quotes for a Leer 100XL and ARE, and they both came out to around $4k. It’s surprising how high the prices are now.

I found a Jason camper shell on Facebook Marketplace for just $150 after searching for months. It was at a used car lot since it was a silver shell on a blue truck. When I checked it out, I saw it had a sticker for a 2014 Tacoma long bed, which was perfect for my truck. Keep searching; you’ll find something eventually.

I have an ARE on my 21 OR long bed. It doesn’t have windoors, which would be nice, but I managed to find a used one for $1000 after searching on Marketplace and Craigslist for a couple of months. It really enhances the bed’s usability for camping and securing gear, plus I added a roof rack for transporting kayaks and more. It’s great for my needs.

I bought a Leer 180, color-matched for my 2013 TRD OR SB, back in 2017 for $2300 installed. This was before prices went crazy. I added features like a carpeted headliner and windoors, and I really love it. It has plenty of space and the rear door opens wide, which is great for moving bigger items.

I have a Leer 100XR with roof rails, windoors, and a removable front window. I built a DIY drawer system inside to keep everything organized, and it’s waterproof. I even mounted a propane bottle and have a solar setup for camping. It’s been working well for the last six months.

I went with a Century base model, which cost me $3500. It has windoors and a rack rail on top. The color matching looks good, and I opted not to get any extra features.

I managed to find a Snugtop Rebel on Facebook Marketplace for $1200. It came with windoors and a Yakima rack. It was originally a cement grey color, but I had it line-x sprayed to match my Tacoma. The original price was $3600, which blew my mind. If you can wait, I recommend holding out for a good used option because spending $3k-$4k on a new shell is pretty crazy.

I had a Leer 122 on my first gen, and I really loved it. It had a removable front window and windoors, which were super useful. If you can, definitely get the windoors; they make a big difference. The only reason I don’t have it now is because I rolled my truck, but it was a great shell while I had it.

I got a Leer with all the same features you mentioned and the Auto Unlock for a similar price. The dealer had a promotion that saved me about $500.

That’s great to hear! I’m not too concerned about the Auto Unlock myself.
