What is the towing capacity of a Toyota Tacoma?

Hey folks, I’m looking at towing a travel trailer that’s about 3,000 lbs dry weight. It’s a Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS. I’ve heard a few things about towing with the Tacoma, and I’m wondering if anyone knows the best way to manage this. I know about checking the tongue weight and getting a weight distribution hitch (WDH) and brake controller (EBC), but what about payload? I think the Tacoma’s is around 1,100 lbs, but I’m not sure. I plan to weigh everything carefully and keep the trailer’s gear in the trailer to stay within limits. Any tips?

Hey Glock? For a trailer that size, you’re right on track with checking the tongue weight and getting a WDH and EBC. The Tacoma’s payload capacity is indeed around 1,100 lbs, but it’s smart to keep track of everything you load. A 21.5-foot trailer packed at 3,000 lbs is pretty impressive; they can be surprisingly well-equipped. If you’re looking for a shorter trailer, that’s a good call to avoid too much sway. :+1:

Wow, those trailers only weigh about 3,000 lbs? That’s impressive! What’s a WDH stand for? And is EBC a trailer brake controller?

Yes, WDH is a weight distribution hitch, and EBC is indeed a brake controller. Sorry for the abbreviations! The trailer’s design is pretty clever, fitting a lot of features into a compact size. You might want to check out some reviews or videos online, they really showcase how nice these trailers are. The Black Label edition is pretty amazing too.

I haven’t dived deep into pricing, but you can usually find these trailers listed for under $20k. I saw a 2022 model for around $16k, but that was likely a closeout deal. The Black Label edition is also worth checking out if you want something a bit more upscale. I’m still getting ready to buy, so I’m just doing my homework for now. :books:

Hey, sorry to bump an old thread, but did you end up getting the trailer? We just signed for a Keystone Springdale today, which is about 3,300 lbs. We’ll have a WDH and I already installed the REDARC controller. I pick it up on the 6th.

Not yet for me. I had some unexpected medical issues, so the trailer purchase will have to wait. But I’m looking forward to getting one soon. I’ll be keeping an eye out for your update! :truck:

Hey, how did it go with your travel trailer? What are you towing it with, and how’s it working out for you?

Did you get your trailer yet?

Yes, I did. It’s a Springdale 1800BH, weighing about 3,400 lbs. The Tacoma towed it home without any issues. Just need to watch the payload since the tongue weight is 470 lbs with the WDH setup. The combined weight of us, the gear, and the trailer adds up quickly, so I’ve got about a 100 lbs buffer. I’ll be keeping my clothes and food in the trailer to stay within limits.
