Almost lost my skid plate "D"

While driving back from a three-week offroad trip, I noticed that the “D” on my skid plate looked strange. When I leaned down and gave it a little wiggle, it popped right off. I checked the other two letters, and though they are loose, they are still holding on well enough. It seems like the OEM double-sided tape failed. Has anyone else experienced this?

I put the letter in my glovebox for now. I might have it reattached during my next oil change if it’s not too expensive. I suspect the glue failed during a creek crossing, with the hot offroad time followed by a sudden dip in ice-cold water causing the skid plate to shrink and the “D” to pop off.

Has anyone had their letters fall off? If so, how did you glue them back on?

I’ve had the same issue with letters falling off my skid plate. It sounds like the OEM tape just couldn’t handle the extreme conditions. For a fix, you might want to try a strong adhesive like epoxy or industrial-strength double-sided tape.

It’s a skid plate, after all. I’ve lost all three of those that I once had. Because of this, there are no other skid plates with stick-on letters in that location on the market.

@Mitchelle I think that’s fine, but since I kept it, I might as well put it back on till it chooses to be free once more.

I’ve had a similar issue with the letters on my vehicle’s skid plate coming loose after a tough offroad trip. The OEM double-sided tape didn’t hold up to the extreme conditions, and one of the letters fell off, while the others were loose. To fix it, I used a strong adhesive like E6000 or Gorilla Glue. I cleaned both surfaces thoroughly, applied the adhesive, and let it cure for a day or two before driving. This method worked well for me, and the letters stayed securely in place even after more offroad adventures. If you’re planning to do it yourself, make sure to use an adhesive that’s designed for heavy-duty applications and can withstand varying temperatures.
