Anyone with overland builds, how much payload do you actually have left?

My truck has about 960 lbs of payload before my girlfriend and I hop in, then it drops to 560 lbs. How on earth are you guys running all that camper, bumpers, gear, and still have room left?

Overlanding builds, huh… :face_vomiting:

It’s more like ‘insta-landing.’

Wait till they call it their ‘rig’ :joy:

I always think these setups look cool in pictures, all decked out in the woods. But when you see them in town, it’s wild… they’re lugging around what looks like 2,000 lbs of every piece of gear they could buy on credit.

@Linden
Gas mileage is a killer. I take my setup off when I’m not camping and store it. It’s a bit of a hassle, but worth it to save on gas. I like the balance.

I’ve been debating a square drop camper versus a cab canopy. My truck’s a daily driver and even a roof box cut mileage by 5-7%. Getting all-terrain tires soon and those will hurt my MPG even more.

@Davin
Yeah, the tires made the biggest dent for me. Mine fit without needing a lift, though. And when I load rifle cases on the roof rack, that’s another gas guzzler. But at least my tent stays low and doesn’t impact things too badly.

@Davin
Square drops are so tempting. They pack in creature comforts compared to a roof tent, but the cost is steep. I mostly camp on the beach and can’t really tow one out there. If you can swing it, go for it and let me live through you.

@Davin
My GFC canopy wasn’t as bad for gas mileage as my 33-inch tires were.

Yeah, fuel efficiency goes down fast… and your setup becomes a target for theft. I bought an older 4Runner for daily driving, and even that barely saves on gas.

@Jovi
Where’d you find a working 4Runner for $5,000?

My old Tundra gets the same MPG with or without the tent and gear, so I just leave it on. I go camping almost every weekend anyway.

@Linden
Yeah, they drive around like that and never actually go off-road. :joy:

@Linden
Looks nice and clean, but it’s the off-road version of ‘all show, no go.’

My setup works fine for most overland routes. I drive behind my wife, who pulls a trailer with our gear in her Camry. She’s my backup if I get stuck. It’s less stressful that way.

-780 lbs after adding everything.

This person is serious about camping.

Pretty sure I’m in ‘payload debt’ at this point… but hey, they say if you have leftover payload, you’re not trying hard enough, right?

The weight of my ego, I mean… average according to Google.
